Electronic Cigarette “Throat Hit”
What is throat hit?
People are constantly asking about “throat hit” and what affects it. Throat hit is essentially the slight burning sensation or the level of harshness one feels in the back of the throat when inhaling. The amount of throat you get from an eCig is often a combination of many factors:
1. The type and strength of eLiquid
Stronger nicotine levels typically result in more throat hit. Also, a VG eLiquid (vegetable glycerin) will provide more vapor and hence more throat hit then a straight PG (propylene glycol) mix or even a PG/VG blend.

2. Coil or Atomizer Head – Type and Resistance
The atomizer head or coil being used is typically a huge factor in overall throat it sensation. The lower the resistance the hotter the vaping temperature, and therefore the more throat hit.
You can also purchase dual coil versus single coil cartomizers. Dual Coil Cartomizers result in lower resistance and therefore typically more vapor and throat hit.
3. Battery Output Voltage
A higher operating voltage will result in better throat it because it will burn hotter. As your battery loses it’s charge it may decrease in operating voltage. This is where Variable voltage batteries or VV batteries come in handy. The ability to adjust the voltage allows the user to lock in the voltage output of the battery and help ensure you’re always vaporizing your eLiquid at the same temperatures.
4. Cartomizer / Atomizer Variation
You may notice variation on occasion from one cartomizer / atomizer setup to another. Some just perform better than others and will give you more vapor and/or throat hit – hey it’s an imperfect world!
Variable voltage batteries will let you increase the voltage for coil heads that don’t perform quite as well as others or to compensate for atomizers that are slowly fading in vapor output.
Conclusion
It’s an imperfect science, but by trying different strengths and types of eLiquids and cartomizers / atomizers and by ensuring you have a high voltage battery (for the devices that need it), you should be able to achieve a great throat it on whatever device you vape with!
